Symbolism in Samudra Manthan

SAMUDRA MANTHAN………..10/02/2010

Gods and the Demons churned the Ocean to get the Nectar of immortality. It was an elaborate process. Mount Mandaranchal was used as the dasher. Vasuki , the king of the serpents became the churning rope. Gods (the Devas) held the tail of the snake, while the

Demons (Asuras) held its head, and they pulled on it alternately causing the mountain to rotate, which in turn churned the ocean. Vishnu in the form of a turtle Kurma held the mountain on his back to prevent it from sinking.

In the process a pot of poison Halahala also came out of the ocean which terrified the Gods and the demons as the poison was so toxic that it could destroy all creations. Out of compassion for all living things, Shiva drank the poison. Parvati held his neck to prevent it from going down to the earth. It was so potent that the color of Shiva’s neck changed into blue and he became Neelkanth- the blue necked one.

14 Ratnas were produced. Finally Dhanvantri, the heavenly physician emerged with a pot of Amrita, the heavenly nector of immortality.

Samudra Manthan symbolizes the spiritual endevor of a person to achieve self realization through concentration of the mind, withdrawal of the senses, control of desire and practice of austerity and ascetism.

  1. The Devas and the asuras represent the positive and negative aspects of one’s personality. Through integration and harmony of both a common goal can be attained.
  2. The Ocean of milk is the mind or the human consciousness. Mind is like the ocean while the thoughts and emotions are the waves in the ocean
  3. Mandhara symbolizes concentration. Man (the mind) Dhara ( a single line)- holding the mind in one line which is possible only through concentration.
  4. Lord Vishnu as Kurma-tortoise symbolizes withdrawal of the senses required to practice concentration and meditation.
  5. Vasuki is Desire…Vasuki used in the churning of the ocean denotes that the Devas and the Asuras held the desire (to seek immortality) Desire not controlled will overpower and destroy an individual
  6. The Halhala poison is suffering and pain…great inner turmoil when the mind is subjected to intense concentration- Sadhana.
  7. Lord Shiva is the epitome of courage, initiation, willingness, discipline simplicity, austerity, detachment and compassion.
  8. The Ratnas Denote spiritual powers….Siddhi, which should be used judicially and not for selfish gains.
  9. Dhanvantari symbolizes Health or Immortality which can be achieved only when the mind and the body is in perfect state of health.
  10. Mohini is delusion of the mind in the form of pride and egoism to which the auras succumbed and thus lost sight of their goal. This is the last hurdle before experiencing self realization.
  11. The Amrit is the ultimate achievement of self realization
With self realization comes LAXMI-the universal achievement...
